“THE DAY OF THE SOUP”, Adamsdown Cardiff

Almost every culture has its own unique soup – Welsh cawl, Polish borscht, Jewish chicken soup, French onion, Irish stew, Italian minestrone, Chinese noodle and Scotch broth. The list is never ending and to celebrate soup a variety of community groups in Adamsdown are getting together to exchange recipes, stories and life experiences at a series of “The Day of the Soup” events. The first one kicks off at St German's Church on Tuesday, 27th January at 3.30pm. 3.30pm – 6.00 pm is open to the public

“The Day of the Soup” will reflect the rich cultural diversity that makes up Adamsdown, Cardiff and has been organised with the co-operation of a range of organisations including Organic Centre Wales. They have all come together to promote organic, local and healthy food and raise awareness about food wastage and food values, but just as important is the opportunity to bring the community together, breaking down age, cultural and religious barriers that can exist in busy city centres.
Katie Palmer of Food Cardiff has played a key role in getting the idea off the ground. “Good food creates strong, healthy communities. The Day of the Soup is a wonderful way of bringing the community and different food cultures together.”

Fr Dean of St German's parish church Adamsdown, and one of the main organisers said: “Like many inner city areas, Adamsdown is a very mixed community and yes, has many issues. But it's a vibrant and fascinating one and we want to create an event which brings people together through food, with an emphasis on sustainable and healthy living.

”Sharing 'Soup Stories' is an important part of this event. We want people socialising with one another, talking about food and what lies behind it! We are sure that this will happen quite naturally.”

Jane Powell of Organic Centre Wales said: “This celebration of soup is part of a Wales-wide project looking at the values behind food. Food isn't just a commodity, it's something that creates community and culture, and we need to understand that better if we are to create a sustainable food system in Wales.”

Please come along and join the free, fair food event in the heart of the capital city to
discover the story behind each soup, why it's important to the person who made it and where it's from. The Day of the Soup is a celebration, a series of fair food events, working with various individuals and groups in Adamsdown, Splott and across Cardiff. The event is as simple and as lovely as soup itself!
