Organic Farm Incomes in England and Wales 2014/15

The analysis of 2014/15 data showed that organic farms achieved higher or similar profitability to comparable conventional farms, and on organic LFA (less favoured area) cattle & sheep farms profitability was statistically higher than conventional farms. At the enterprise level, organic dairying net margins were above the conventional level, whilst for beef and sheep enterprises, organic margins were ahead of the conventional sector. Cropping enterprises also showed a positive position for most organic activities, and therefore it can be concluded that with the addition of support payments, organic farms are performing at a similar or better level than comparable conventional farms.

OCW Producer Survey 2015

The 2015 Organic Centre Wales producer survey has shown the sector is progressing steadily. The survey was again well supported with 420 producers completing the survey, a response rate of 78%. Based on the response rate, the total certified land area in Wales is estimated at 78,400 ha in November 2015, an increase in 2% over 2014, indicating that participation in the new Glastir Organic scheme has had the effect of halting the reduction in land area shown by Defra's data collected by certification bodies during 2014. This represents 4.3% of Welsh agricultural land (including rough grazing) in 2014.

Welsh Organic Producer Survey 2013

The 2013 Welsh organic producer survey was undertaken via a telephone survey during October and November 2013. Contact details for a total of 946 Welsh organic producers were identified, and 707 producers were contacted
(76%). This resulted in 537 completed surveys as 151 producers had decertified from organic farming or retired, with only 19 producers declining to participate.

Consumer Attitudes towards Organic Food 2013

In 2013, BOBL commissioned Beaufort Research to carry out a second phase of research which built on the results of a survey originally conducted in 2010. The 2013 survey included a review of 2012 Kantar World panel data and a comparison with its equivalent from 2009 along with a survey of 700 Welsh consumers. In addition, BOBL required qualitative research in the form of focus groups to help explain some of the survey findings by further exploring understanding and attitudes towards organic food, as well as the motivations and barriers to purchase.

Shear waste: The market potential of organic wool from Wales

British wool prices have transformed in the past four years, reaching a record 25 year high in 2011. The British Wool Marketing Board, that handles almost the entirety of the UK wool clip, is confident that the strengthening market is an underlying, long term trend. Simultaneously, demand from manufacturers and consumers for materials that are natural, sustainable, environment-and welfare-friendly in origin, is strengthening. UK sales from the organic textiles sector alone is valued in excess of £100 million.

This report explores the growing markets for British wool and organic textiles, and seeks to understand why organic wool remains largely invisible and the sustainability of its associated business sector so fragile.

Public Sector Procurement in Wales with reference to Organic Fruit and Vegetables

This report was commissioned by the BOBL project as part of Organic Centre Wales and provides an overview of the public sector procurement opportunities and challenges facing the organic sector in Wales.

Menter a Busnes (Mabis) were asked to evaluate a tendering exercise in which the BOBL project played a key part in ensuring a consortium bid was submitted by organic producers to supply fruit and vegetables to universities in Mid and South Wales. During a review of the project it was concluded that most of the report was applicable to all commodities and Mabis were asked to include the opportunities for both the Organic Milk Sector, and the Organic Meat Sector.

Carbon footprinting for farm businesses

As awareness of our impact on the environment has increased, it has become more important to measure and monitor that impact accurately. In this context, several calculators have been developed to assess the carbon footprint of farm businesses. However, there is little consistency between them in terms of either the methodology or the raw data on which the calculations are based, and this means they can give very different answers to the same question.
This document sets out to: develop a better understanding of how footprinting calculators work; explain how and why they differ from one another; highlight the issues to consider when choosing the most appropriate calculator for a particular farm or purpose; summarise the key features of the main calculators currently in use.

Arolwg Cynhyrchwyr Canolfan Organig Cymru 2015

Mae Arolwg Cynhyrchwyr Canolfan Organig Cymru 2015 wedi dangos bod y sector yn cynyddu'n gyson. Unwaith eto cafodd yr arolwg ei gefnogi'n dda gyda 420 o gynhyrchwyr yn ei gwblhau, cyfradd ymateb o 78%. Ar sail y gyfradd ymateb, ym mis Tachwedd 2015, amcangyfrifwyd mai cyfanswm yr arwynebedd tir ardystiedig yng Nghymru oedd 78,400 ha, cynnydd o 2% dros 2014. Mae hyn yn dangos mai effaith cyfranogiad yn y cynllun Glastir Organig newydd fu atal y gostyngiad yn yr arwynebedd tir a ddangoswyd gan ddata Defra a gasgwlyd gan y cyrff ardystio. Mae'r ffigwr newydd hwn yn cynrychioli 4.3% o dir amaethyddol Cymru (gan gynnwys pori garw) yn 2014.
